Is India Set To Become The New China?

With India expected to launch its most powerful supercomputer in June 2017, it could earn them a place among the world's top 10 fastest supercomputers.  The as-yet-unnamed machine will be jointly hosted at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting at Noida in Uttar Pradesh.  This truly is a remarkable step forward and will help in monsoon forecasting amongst other weather problems.

Is this this start of India replicating China's success in HPC, only time will tell. Read more ...

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) - Is Your Business Ready?

The 25th May 2018 is a date ALL businesses need to be ready for, as the 1995 Data Protection Directive (DPD) is replaced with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).   GDPR is the new European legal framework for the protection of personal data and will change the way your business can collect, use and transfer personal data. Not only will you need to know where the data is stored, you may also need to review and change the way it is collected.  For any company who holds personal data it WILL affect you.  With the exact changes still to unfold, your business needs to be ready, if not, the cost could be in the millions as well as a level of personal liability.

Here at Red Oak we are proactively tackling the changes to ensure all our customers are protected with our very own Information Security Expert, Nye Thomas.  For any questions or concerns about GDPR or Information Security in general please give Nye a call - 01242 806188 - We are here to help!

People Often Ask - Why HPC?

With clusters that have a high capital cost, perhaps difficult to maintain with with potentially large power and cooling bills - why do people bother with HPC?

Quite simply, is it because so many industries can no longer sustain their growth without immense amounts of computing power.  Computational modelling is a core part of all high-value design processes, and large scale data analysis is now a business as usual activity rather than a competitive advantage.  Having an HPC system will allow your existing research to flourish and new routes can be explored.

Having just returned from this years GPU Tech Conference in California, Dairsie Latimer, Managing Consultant has this to report

There’s nothing quite like Spring in Northern California especially when back in the UK the weather couldn’t decide on what season it should be!  Combine that with the GPU Technology Conference in San Jose last week and I had a rather enjoyable few days across the pond, with our USA colleagues and other UK compatriots.  This conference was a chance to go back to my roots in low level computer architecture, parallel software development and computer graphics but also, more importantly, to submerge myself into the burgeoning area of machine leaning and AI. The GPU Technology conference delivered a number of very interesting hardware and software stack announcements from NVIDIA (Volta, DGX-1 Volta, DLA, Cuda 9 and) much of which put the focus firmly on machine learning.

Find out more on "Machine Learning" and "AI" in Dairsie's blog post.
